Day 28

For my last full day in Llandudno I wanted to do another hike. Since I had already hiked the Great Orme, hiked to Conwy and walked the promenade countless times, all that was remaining was Little Orme. Little Orme is the mountain that rises 463ft from the east side of Llandudno and provides some great views of the surrounding area.

The day started off fine with a 2 mile walk to the start of the trail. I swung by the grocery to pick up some stuff for lunch before hand too. By the time I got to the start of the trail, it was warming up pretty quickly. I had to take my undershirt off so it wouldn't get drenched with sweat.

The hike to the peak only took a few minutes and when I got to the top it started pouring down rain for a good 5 minutes. Since there wasn't anywhere to get shelter, I just stood there waiting for it to end. I could see that the cloud wasn't very big and that it would pass soon. It did and when the rain stopped the views were incredible.

The rain shower had taken all of the haze out of the air and I was left with some outstanding views of the surrounding area. Soon after it stopped raining I was joined by 5 other people. They were staying down on the beach and made a phone call to some of their friends to come out and try to spot them at the top. I joined in waiving around and eventually they were found.

I sat down on some rocks and had lunch and then started talking with a husband and wife who were part of that group. We talked about where I'd been, where I was from and some areas they suggested visiting. When we left, they took one route and I took another. Apparently theirs was rather difficult and I ended up meeting them at the bottom. We got to talking some more and they invited me back to their place for some tea and biscuits (cookies). I couldn't decline so I followed them to the place they were staying at.

It was two families that were staying there, all friends who had rented the place out for the week. They made some tea and we all sat outside on the back yard overlooking both the Great and Little Orme as well as the beach and town of Llandudno. They had a killer view!

One of the guys was a motorcyclist and was blown away when I told him about how much sun we have in the southwest. They were also saying how much of a fluke this nice weather has been. When the tea and biscuits were done I thanked them and headed back to the hostel to plan the next few days.

After seeing the pictures of Snowdonia from a fellow traveler I knew I wanted to go see it for myself. I found a hostel at the base of some of the hiking trails and booked it for two nights. I'll take buses to get there tomorrow, relax, catch up on some work and get to bed early. Then on Friday I'll wake up bright and early and start hiking. If I take the trails I want to, I'm looking at about 17 miles of hiking so I want to start as early as possible.

Snowdon Peak in Snowdonia National Park is 1,084 meters (3,560ft) high and is the highest mountain in Wales. There's only a 20% chance of rain for Friday so I'll bring my jacket and some layers just to be on the safe side. It looks like there's a grocery in town too so I'll pack some snacks and lunch. If the weather holds out, the views will be incredible!

Across the desert - Day 11 - Epic Motorcycle Ride

Across the desert - Day 11 - Epic Motorcycle Ride

Tuesday, July 24, 2012 @ 7:00 PM in 2012 Epic Motorcycle Ride

Today we woke up around 6am so we could get packed, eat and fuel up before starting the long haul to our campsite east of Salt Lake City. We were on the road around 7:15 and immediately jumped on I-80 East. We would be on this for about 500 miles today in total.

The day started off with nice weather but by the time we stopped for lunch in Elko it was really heating up. We resorted to pouring water into our riding gear in order to cool off while we rode. The water would evaporate pretty quickly which was a shame.

About a half hour west of Wendover the clouds started darkening quickly and it looked like rain. We stopped and zipped up our riding gear and took off. Not 30 seconds later the rain started. It wasn't too heavy and only lasted a little while but this would make it the 10th day in a row we hit some sort of precipitation. We hit a break in the rain when we got to Wendover and had just enough time to fuel up and find a liquor store before the rain hit. If we had been another minute slower we would have been drenched. Fortunately by the time we made it to the salt flats the rain was getting farther and farther behind us.

The last 80 miles or so of the ride seemed to take forever. We finally hit I-215 and made our way to Exit 6 where we would get off and make our way to the campground. We were happy when we rolled into our campsite and it was still daylight. Our long day of riding was complete and the temperatures were quite pleasant. It might not have been our longest distance day, but it was definitely the most monotonous day of the trip so far.

After setting up camp we looked around for some fire wood so we could get a fire going. Some of the empty campsites still had some laying around that we were able to take back to our site. Unfortunately they had some really heavy rains there earlier in the day so everything was wet and hard to start. We tried a few things and finally resorted to dousing it all with some gasoline. That did the trick and we had a nice fire the rest of the night.

For dinner I had some of the Natural High Chicken Pot Pie with Mashed Potatoes and I was blown away with how good it was. Ryan had the Honey Mustard Chicken and said it was pretty good too. We're both extremely exhausted so we're going to head off to bed now. Tomorrow takes us down to Arches National Park where we'll be staying for two nights. The ride is only 250 miles which seems like an extremely short day compared to what we've been doing.

WEMF 2006

Monday, July 24, 2006 @ 12:00 AM in General Travel

I just got back from the World Electronic Music Festival up in Tweed, Ontario this weekend. Scott and I drove up from Indy on Friday night. We left his house around 9 at night and drove straight through for the 13 hour trip. We got up there around 10:00 in the morning but couldn't get in until Noon because that was the time they would switch the ticket prices from the 3 day to 2 day price (a savings of 50 bucks). So we ended up just sitting around for a few hours and waited to get in.

Once we got in the gates, we had to find a place to park and set up camp. We drove around for a bit and ended up finding a spot that was in a pretty central location to all the stages. We walked around a bit and realized most of the people were still passed out from the night before and none of the music would really start up again until about 5-6:00 at night. Since we had been running on no sleep and were hungry, we made some sandwiches and then slept in the car for an hour.

After the nap, it was almost time for the music to start up again. I changed into my I <3 Boobs shirt and we started walking around. Almost immediately people started coming up to me and saying stuff like "hell yeah man, me too" or "nice shirt, don't we all!" This lasted the entire night and was pretty funny that so many people came up and talked to me because of the shirt. I ended up running into OTer DittoAlex because he recognized the shirt.

They had a few different stages set up. There was a Hardcore stage, Trance stage, Drum and Bass stage and an Alternative stage. Each one had a different crowd that followed it. It was pretty funny to see the different types of people who like the different types of music. Scott and I basically walked around all of them since all the music was pretty good.

We ended up staying up unitl around 3:00am and then decided we should probably try to get some sleep before heading home. We slept until about 8:00 in the morning and then packed up the car and started our journey home. The way back only took about 11 and a half hours. The drive back was really nice. It was partly cloudy through most of Ontario which made for an easy drive.

Unfortunately I didn't take any photos because it's hard to carry a camera around when there are 5,000+ people jumping around.
