Camping in the Jemez

Camping in the Jemez

Brandon and Erin asked if I wanted to join them on a camping trip this weekend out into the Jemez. The area they were planning on camping is somewhere I'd never been before. The road out there is awesome. It passes through some tunnels and follows a river for quite a while.

We found a campsite that was a little hike off the road. It took a while and a decent effort to carry all our stuff from the car down to the campsite. It was pretty steep getting down to the area where the camping was. We got everything set up and got a fire going and then started dinner. I made some green chile cheese burgers with some roasted corn on the cob for dinner Friday night.

On Saturday we had breakfast and waited for the sun to come up a little bit more then started hiking up and through the river while drinking some beers. I was pretty amazed at how well Canyon and Wicket (Brandon and Erin's dog) did in the water. I was expecting Canyon to avoid it like the plague but after a while she was pretty happy to splash through the water following us.

We stopped a couple times to have a drink and just after the 2nd stop, Brandon went to put Wicket on some rocks since he was getting pretty cold and tired from the water. There was a huge rattle snake chilling there and Brandon didn't see it until he had almost set Wicket on top of it. He flew himself and the dog backwards into the water, fortunately avoiding any kind of bite. Erin and I could hear it going crazy with its rattle after that. The crazy part was that Canyon had just ran through there which is why we assumed it would be fine.

After that little shake-up we decided to turn around and head back to camp. Once back at camp we made some sandwiches and snacked. Dark clouds were rolling in and it started raining so we just hunkered up under the canopy and played a dice game called Farkel while we waited out the rain.

The rain eventually stopped and we started collecting some firewood for the evening fire and dinner. For dinner tonight, Brandon made some lemon chicken, beans caesar salad and some sausage. We were all pretty tired from being in the sun most of the day so we were all passed out around 10pm.

It stormed a few times through the night but it wasn't anything too extreme. We got up, ate a quick breakfast with eggs and some of the leftover hamburger meat and started packing up the campground. The hard part was carrying everything back up to the cars. Even though we had drank most of the water and ate a lot of the food, the coolers were still heavy and awkward to carry back up.

On the way out we stopped at one of the cliff tunnels and took some photos before heading back to Albuquerque. Back at home, Canyon is passed out and is in desperate need of a good wash and grooming. I'll be looking for a place this week to take her to.

Wasting a Beautiful Day

Saturday, July 27, 2013 @ 6:10 PM in 2013 Europe

Day 31

My plan yesterday was to stay at the hostel in Llanberis another couple nights so I could do more hiking and exploring in Snowdonia. Unfortunately when I inquired about vacancies at the hostel, they said they were completely booked. They called a few of the other hostels within bus distance and they were also all booked. Bummer.

Anything even remotely close to Snowdonia was completely booked (even the hostel I stayed at in Llandudno). I think everyone was taking advantage of the nice weather and heading to the parks. Lesson learned: If you're going somewhere awesome and it's near a weekend and you have nowhere else to be, book through the weekend!

What I had to do was head to Birmingham, England (the nearest biggest city within a day's travel). Since Llanberis was so remote, getting anywhere else on my prior list of destinations simply wasn't going to happen. I figured stationing myself in a large city will make it easier to plan my next move.

When I left Llanberis today, it was absolutely gorgeous outside! The weather was perfect for hiking, which made leaving even worse. I had to take two buses to get to Porthmadog, Wales and then I jumped on the train to Birmingham.

I bought my train ticket last night but there wasn't a ticket agent or ticket machine at the Porthmadog station, so not knowing what to do I got on the train. The ticket inspector on the train didn't know what to do with my confirmation number so he told me get off at a specific station where I could collect my ticket.

The train was hot and crowded. Eventually after 2 hours we made it to the station where I could get my ticket. I jumped off and got the ticket. When I got back on I actually had a seat I could sit at. Fortunately it was a little cooler where I sat down.

After another two and a half hours I made it to the bustling city of Birmingham. It's always quite the change going from a small rural town to a huge city. All the traffic and people and noise is not something I particularly enjoy.

I passed a huge open air market on my way to the hostel. I planned on getting something fresh there to cook with for dinner. After checking into the hostel, I went back to the market just in time for them to shut everything down. I was able to get some red peppers but that was it.

I just ran into two german guys who I hung out with for a night in Llanberis so we'll meet up for a few beers after we all eat. I think tomorrow I'll just hang out and get some work done. I've been needing to spend a day doing a real work session so this might be the time to do it.

More rain in Aspen - Day 14 - Epic Motorcycle Ride

More rain in Aspen - Day 14 - Epic Motorcycle Ride

Friday, July 27, 2012 @ 7:00 PM in 2012 Epic Motorcycle Ride

We had been sleeping with our rain flies off our tents since it's been so hot. Last night we were woken up in the middle of the night by rain drops coming through our tents and hitting us. We got up and put the rain flies on our tents and heard other people doing the same. We couldn't believe that even being in the middle of the desert we still couldn't get away from the rain.

We woke up around 7, ate and got our bikes and set off so we could try to beat some of the heat on the way to Aspen. It started heating up really quick. By the time we stopped for fuel and food in Grand Junction we were ready for the day to be over. We checked the weather and saw that it was supposed to be thunder storming around Aspen and the exit we needed off of I-70.

We got back on the road and sure enough, right around the time we reached our exit off of I-70 it started to rain. We pulled into a gas station to fuel up and get some gatorade to mix our booze with later tonight. As soon as we headed out of Glenwood Springs on 82 the skies opened up and it poured on us for about a half hour.

Eventually we made it to the Difficult Campground and pulled up to the host campsite to figure out where we were supposed to go. The guy who was in the RV didn't know anything about what was going on and told us to find a lady riding around on a golf cart and she could check us in. We did a loop of the campground and finally found the lady but she couldn't find our reservation anywhere in her little notebook. Ryan told her he had a reservation number so she looked through her book again and found us. We had to fill out a bunch of information we had already filled out online and finally made it to our site.

When we got to the site, we quickly set up our tents before the rain started too hard. We threw all of our stuff in the bear box so it wouldn't get wet in the rain. After that we started mixing the gatorade with the remaining vodka we had. The Svedka Clementine flavored vodka mixed with orange gatorade tastes really really good we found out. After drinking for a bit we had dinner. Almost immediately after finishing dinner it started to rain so we decided just to head into our tents. It was about 8:15pm at this point so we figured that wasn't too bad. Also, it isn't about 90 degrees out like it had been the last couple of nights in Moab. This is the last night of camping and of course it had to be in the rain. At least tomorrow we head back to Denver where we can take a real shower and sleep in real beds again.
